It’s been a long day, knot traveler. You hiked up Vulture Mountain, trekked down Wolf Canyon, and took a detour to Coyote Gulch. The forest is clearly a hotbed of dangerous animals, so you should probably make a secure campsite before the sun goes down and the man-eating bears emerge. It’s pretty well-known that in addition to wanting to eat you, bears have awful breath and a love of picnic baskets.

* The Tautline resembles its cousin the Rolling Hitch (Lesson 23), but is a favorite amongst campers for its ability to tighten or loosen easily, and then seize under a load. This makes it ideal for tent lines, although some argue that a Midshipman’s Hitch is better. But I prefer this one, and I wrote the book, so take that.
